A Beginner’s Guide to Dribbling, Passing, and Shooting

Dribbling, passing, and shooting are the fundamental skills of basketball. Mastering these skills will help you improve your game and become a more effective player.  

Dribbling

  • Proper Grip: Hold the ball with your fingertips.
  • Ball Handling: Use your fingertips to control the ball.
  • Body Position: Keep your head up and eyes focused on the court.
  • Dribbling Techniques: Practice crossovers, between-the-legs dribbles, and behind-the-back dribbles.

Passing

  • Chest Pass: A basic pass used for short distances.  
  • Bounce Pass: A pass that bounces once before reaching the receiver.  
  • Overhead Pass: A pass used for longer distances.  
  • Baseball Pass: A one-handed pass used for quick outlet passes.

Shooting

  • Proper Form: Maintain good posture, elbow alignment, and follow-through.  
  • Shooting Techniques: Practice free throws, jump shots, and layups.
